MSU Super-Precision Filter

Filter for colour-depth enhancing

MSU Graphics & Media Lab (Video Group)

Method ideas: Dr. Dmitriy Vatolin
Implementation: Artem Titarenko

Filter is intended for increasing the colour depth of video (bits per pixel) while preserving details and borders.

Main problem of this method is slow processing speed. But it can be applied with MSU Super-Resolution filter - in this case temporary results of the latter filter will be used by the former, and they will work together slightly slower than each taken separately.

Examples

Filter is applied for colour depth increasing from 5 to 8 bits per channel. All examples are presented as extracted video frames and video sequences. Video codec DivX 4.12 in Quality-based mode was used for compression.

The first example is from "amelie" sequence:

Source frame (5 bits per channel)
Source frame (5 bits per channel)
Processed frame (8 bits per channel)
Processed with MSU Super-Precision filter (8 bits per channel)
Histogram of source frame

Histogram of processed frame

The next example is from "toy" sequence:

The next example is from "mobile" sequence:

Public MSU video filters
Here are available VirtualDub and AviSynth filters. Commonly we develop a whole family of some kind of a filter. Generally there are also versions optimized for PC and hardware implementations (ASIC/FPGA/DSP). These optimized versions can be licensed to companies. Please contact us for details via video(at)graphics.cs.msu_ru.
MSU filters for companies
We are working with Intel, Samsung, RealNetworks and other companies on adapting our filters other video processing algorithms for specific video streams, applications and hardware like TV-sets, graphics cards, etc. Some of such projects are non-exclusive. Also we have internal researches. Please let us know via video(at)graphics.cs.msu_ru if you are interested in acquiring a license for such filters or making a custom R&D project on video processing, compression, computer vision.
